Literary Tour of Barranquilla
Literary Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de San Nicolás. Once we're ready, we'll begin this literary tour of Barranquilla. Get ready to dive into the magic of Colombian literature!
We'll first admire the Church of San Nicolas de Tolentino, which was once the city's cathedral and was built more than 300 years ago. From here, we'll pass by the historic Sodería La Estrella, a site where, since the early 20th century, the Barranquilla's intellectual elite used to gather.
In front of the former facilities of the newspaper El Heraldo, we'll talk about Gabriel García Márquez, the most famous Colombian author who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. At these headquarters, García Márquez would write and publish his column La Jirafa, which the French professor Jacques Gilard later collected.
We'll then visit the house of Ramon Vinyes, a Catalan author considered an essential figure in Colombia due to his influence on the city's literature. In fact, García Márques paid tribute to him in his novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, where he appears under the name of "wise Catalan" and "the man who had read everything."
How many mysteries are hidden in the first esoteric library in Barranquilla? The voice of the author Abraham Zacarías will tell us as we reach the Iglesia San José, where García Márquez completed part of his high school studies.
At this last stop, we'll conclude our literary tour after 2 hours.
