At the designated time, we'll meet at the Plaza de la Aduana, the perfect place to immerse yourself in the tradition and culture of Cartagena. Ready to discover the importance of coffee and tobacco? Let's kick off this free walking tour!
At this central spot in Cartagena de Indias, the largest square in the historic center and the former administrative center of the colonial port, we'll tell you how the import and export of goods arriving from all over America were processed. Unsurprisingly, two of the main products were coffee and tobacco.
Before leaving the Plaza de la Aduana, we'll enter a café to enjoy a Colombian coffee. You'll fall in love with its characteristic aroma and flavor! Then, we'll walk toward the Torre del Reloj and the Plaza de los Coches. Here, you'll learn how trade worked during the Colonial era in the city.
Our next stop will be the Plaza de la Proclamación, where key political events took place that marked a before and after in the country. Next, we'll explore the Calle Estanco del Tabaco to understand the historic significance of this leaf in the Caribbean. Did you know that during Colonial times, there was an official tobacco monopoly administered by the Spanish Crown?
After discovering endless anecdotes of the connection between Cartagena and tobacco, we'll stop at the Plaza de Santo Domingo, famous for its vibrant cultural life. This square was one of the most visited spots by merchants, artisans, and travelers for centuries.
Finally, we'll visit another café to enjoy our last coffee, and, if you want, you can try Caribbean tobacco. We'll say our goodbyes at the Plaza Santo Domingo 2.5 hours later, concluding our free walking tour.
