Mombacho Volcano Hike
Activity Details
Are you a fan of hiking? If so, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Granada and drive to one of the most emblematic craters in Nicaragua: the Mombacho Volcano.
In just a 30-minute drive, we'll leave the colonial city behind and begin to ascend through an increasingly humid environment. This will be a prelude to the cloud forest that dominates the top of the volcano.
Upon arrival at the entrance to the Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve, we'll change vehicles and get into an off-roading vehicle that will drive us up a steep road surrounded by coffee plantations until we reach one of the highest parts.
Once immersed in the heart of the cloud forest, we'll start the hiking route of your choice: Crater, Tigrillo or Puma. We'll explore this habitat where more than 700 species of plants and animals coexist. It's a natural paradise!
During the route, we'll stop at viewpoints to admire some beautiful panoramic views of Lake Nicaragua, the archipelago of the islets of Granada and the Apoyo Lagoon. At the end of the walk, we'll return to the starting point of the nature reserve.
Finally, we'll return to your hotel, where we'll say goodbye.
Activity Options
When booking, you'll be able to choose between the following hiking routes.
Crater Trail (5 Hours)
The 1.5 km (0.9 mi) Crater trail will take us around one of the ancient cones of the Mombacho Volcano, offering a unique perspective on the geological history of the site. This trail, which is the shortest and most accessible, stands out for its scenic and educational approach. Throughout the hike, we'll skirt the circular depression as we talk to you about the volcano's eruptions, as well as its formation and transformation.
Here, with a bit of luck, it's common to find camouflaged reptiles, hummingbirds sipping nectar from flowers and some trees and bushes, whose roots hang in the air. This route is ideal for a contemplative experience with a low level of difficulty.
Tigrillo Trail (6 Hours)
The Tigrillo trail, a 2.5 km (1.5 mi) route, will take us on a circular path through the cloud forest without great physical demands. As we advance, we'll show you the different botanical species, such as the matapalo, and we'll identify some birds, such as the goldfinch or the thrush.
From various strategic points of El Tigrillo, we'll stop at different natural balconies to enjoy the view of Lake Nicaragua and the volcanic profile of the land on clear days.
Puma Trail (7 Hours)
The ideal option for the more adventurous! In this option, we'll walk for 4 km (2.4 mi) along a very difficult trail. We'll ascend and descend steep stretches that will demand great physical effort, but will be rewarded by the best views of the surroundings of Mombacho.
This route is also home to a myriad of species in a wilder environment. You might encounter howler monkeys, emerald toucans or the three-toed sloth. Watch out for the leaves on the bushes, as there are often glass frogs. They are almost transparent!
Activity Duration
Please keep in mind that the duration indicated for each route is the sum of the transfers from your hotel in Granada to the nature reserve and the time it will take to complete the hiking route.
