Zapatera & El Muerto Islands Day Trip
Day Trip Details
After picking you up at your hotel in Granada, we'll head to one of the docks of Lake Cocibolca. After a 10-minute ride, we'll arrive at the port of Cabañas Amarillas, and board a boat to begin a tranquil 1.5-hour trip.
Throughout our sail, we'll be surrounded by an incredible landscape, featuring the Mombacho Volcano on the horizon. First, we'll dock at Zapatera Island, the second-largest island on the lake.
Once there, we'll visit the indigenous community of Sonzapote, for a 1-hour stroll through, accompanied by members of the tribe. Then, we'll go into its archaeological site, where we'll see pre-Columbian idols carved in stone that reach up to 2 m (6ft 5 in) high.
At the end of this walk among ancestral vestiges, we'll stop to enjoy a fruit snack. After this break, we'll return to the boat and head towards El Muerto Island.
After a few minutes of sailing, we'll arrive at this private island to explore the small square of El Muerto Island for an hour. There, we'll discover the rock art on volcanic stones. We'll see peculiar symbolic figures, scenes of daily life, representations of ceremonies and astronomical calendars. A fascinating deep dive into a thousand years of history!
Finally, we'll sail back to the Cabañas Amarillas dock. From there, we'll head to your hotel in Granada, bringing the experience to an end, 6 hours later.
