Immerse yourself in daily life along the Irrawaddy River on a two- or three-day cruise from Mandalay: meet the locals, spot dolphins and learn to fish with traditional techniques!
Irrawaddy River Cruise: 2 or 3 Days from Mandalay
On the first day of your excursion, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Mandalay at 7:30 am and take you to the pier. There, a boat will be waiting to take us along the Irrawaddy River to the Sin Kyun community, where the locals will teach us how to make traditional bamboo hats.
Returning to the boat, we'll sail onwards to the Sein Pa Kone community, where the villagers will prepare us a delicious lunch of fish or chicken curry with vegetables. Then, fully energised after our meal, we'll climb onto another, smaller wooden boat with some local fishermen, who will teach us the most important techniques of cooperative fishing. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins too, if we're lucky we'll see them swimming and playing in the river!
Continuing onwards, we'll next reach Myit Kyan Gyi, where we'll spend an hour and a half exploring the village on a guided tour. Afterwards, you'll have an hour and a half of free time to swim in the Irrawaddy River or join the locals playing chinlone, the traditional Burmese national sport with a ball made from rattan.
At 6:30 pm, we'll meet back up again for a dinner of chicken, fish, vegetables and rice, cooked up by the local community. After eating, we'll relax while enjoying stories told by the village elders, before retiring to our tents to relax for the next day.
We'll get up bright and early at 6:30 am and board a fishing boat to sail down the Irrawaddy River at dawn. As the sun rises, we'll spend an hour and a half watching out for the dolphins that live in the area. We'll also enjoy breakfast on board, including omelette, rice, coffee and tea, before joining a group of locals in their daily activities. We'll get to go fishing with nets and plant peanuts!
After saying goodbye to Myit Kyan Gyi, we'll set off by road to the community of She Ma Ga. There, we'll enjoy a hearty lunch of chicken, fish, rice and vegetables to build up our energy for our afternoon's hike through the Sacred Forest. We'll spend two hours walking through its beautiful nature and learning all about its native plants and wildlife!
At the end of the day, we'll return to Mandalay. On the way back, you'll be able to decide if you'd like to visit the Mingun Pagoda, a temple older than the city itself. Finally, we'll drop you back off at your hotel at 5:30 pm, having enjoyed two unforgettable days exploring the Irrawaddy River.
3 Day Tour
When making your reservation, you'll have the option to extend this activity and make it a three-day river cruise. On the third day, we'll visit an area of the Irrawaddy designated for protecting dolphins, as well as perfecting our fishing techniques and getting to know the communities of Sithe and Indown, where we'll enjoy a delicious lunch. Afterwards, we'll learn how to make ceramics according to traditional methods, before dropping you back off in Mandalay at 5:30 pm.
This two- or three-day tour includes one or two nights' accommodation in a luxury tent on the banks of the Irrawaddy River.
Please remember that dolphins are wild animals and there for unpredictable. Depending on currents, winds, weather conditions and other variables beyond our control, we may see more or less of them.
