Castel Nuovo Tickets + Audio Guide
Castel Nuovo, a Gem in Naples
Located next to the port of Naples, the Castel Nuovo, also known as the Maschio Angioino, is one of the must-see landmarks in the capital of Campania.
With this ticket to Castel Nuovo, you'll explore the interior of this ancient medieval fortress at your own pace, following the commentary of an audio guide in English. Through the narration provided by the audio guide, you'll learn about the history of this stronghold, which was commissioned by King Charles I of Anjou in the mid-13th century.
You'll also discover the main rooms of Castel Nuovo and the most famous works of art inside.
What Can You See in Castel Nuovo?
Your ticket with an audio guide in English allows access to the following spaces in Naples' Castel Nuovo:
Hall of the Barons
This room, known as the Sala dei Baroni, is one of the castle's most spectacular spaces. The name of this room refers to the conspiracy of 1487, when King Ferdinand I of Naples invited the rebellious barons to a party so he could arrest them right there. The most spectacular feature of this room is the incredible Gothic vault shaped like an octagonal star, designed by the Mallorcan architect Guillem Sagrera.
Palatine Chapel
The so-called Cappella Palatina is the only surviving part of the original 14th-century Angevin structure. Although most of its frescoes were lost, some fragments of artworks by Giotto can still be seen. It also houses notable sculptures from the Neapolitan Renaissance, such as Francesco Laurana’s Madonna and Child.
Civic Museum
Spread across several floors of the castle's west wing, the Civic Museum offers a chronological journey through the city's art:
- Floor 1: features religious art from the 15th to the 18th centuries, with works by great artists such as Luca Giordano and Mattia Preti.
- Floors 2 and 3: showcase Neapolitan paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries.
- The basement houses the armory, where weapons from various periods are on display. Plus, beneath a large glass floor, visitors can view the archaeological remains of a Roman villa and a necropolis.
