Spanning the Douro River, the Dom Luís I Bridge is one of Porto’s most recognizable symbols. Linking Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia, it offers dramatic views over the river, the old town and the wine cellars along the southern bank.

Background and history

The bridge opened in 1886 and was designed by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, which explains its striking iron arch and industrial elegance. At the time, it was one of the longest iron bridges in the world. Its double-deck design was a major engineering achievement and helped transform connections between the two sides of the river.

Why visit

Walking across the upper level of the bridge is one of the best experiences in Porto. Rising about 150 feet (45 meters) above the river, it provides panoramic views of the Ribeira district, the Douro and the city’s terracotta rooftops. The lower level offers a closer, more intimate perspective near the water and the Gaia waterfront.
