Pastel de Nata Cooking Class
Cooking Class Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at the shop located at Rua da Bainharia, number 135, just a 5-minute walk from the Porto Cathedral. Ready to learn how to make the most renowned dessert in Portugal?
The pastel de Belém, named after the neighborhood of Lisbon it was created in, is also known as pastel de nata, which directly translates as "cream pastry". Despite its name, it doesn't have cream, but instead a custard made with egg, milk, and sugar, which in Portuguese is called nata. Curious, isn't it?
First, we'll start the cooking class by weighing the ingredients. It's important to have the exact measures! Afterward, we'll prepare the syrup, custard, and dough. Shaping the dough requires about 4 hours, but don't worry—we'll have the dough ready to cook.
Once we have all the necessary ingredients ready, it'll be the moment to bake our pastéis de nata for about 15 minutes. We'll make the most of this time to learn about the history of these desserts, which have become a culinary icon in Portugal.
After taking them out of the oven, we'll try the pastéis de nata that we've created and serve them with Port wine, juice, or mineral water. You can take any leftover pastéis de nata home in a box.
In total, this pastel de Belém class will last between 1.5 and 2 hours.
