Little Africa Tour and Samba Show
Little Africa Tour and Samba Show
We will meet up at 6:30 pm next to the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro where we begin our fantastic tour of Little Africa. First, we catch the public tram to the fantastic Olympic Boulevard, the port area which was reformed for the 2016 Games, just 15 minutes away.
In the port area, which looks out over the picturesque Guanabara Bay, you will encounter the wonderful Etnias mural. As we admire this huge, stunning graffiti artwork by Eduardo Kobra, you will hear about the historical importance music has played in this area.
For about an hour and a half, we will walk through the Little Africa district of Rio de Janeiro, whose historic center is located in Pedra do Sal, between the neighborhoods of Gamboa and Saúde. This is the birthplace of the Carioca samba. Here we will encounter the old Valongo Wharf, which is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. You will hear all about the important role it played in the Atlantic slave trade.
Afterward, we head to the most famous bar in the area, Casa Porto, where we spend the following hour and a half enjoying a live samba musical performance. If you want, you can also try some of the delicious local food on offer too.
Following that, we climb into a private car or minibus which will take us to one of Rio de Janeiro's most famous samba schools: Salgueiro. There, for three hours, we will enjoy a unique samba dance show.
The tour finishes at 1:00 am, returning in a minibus or private car to the hotels in the center and south zone of Rio de Janeiro. If you are staying in another area, we will tell you the best way to get back.
