Teresina Fossil Forest Hiking Tour
Activity Details
At the indicated time, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Teresina and, after a short 15-minute drive, arrive at a landscape that seems frozen in time. Welcome to the Teresina Fossil Forest!
Located on the banks of the Poti River, right within the urban area, this open-air site features petrified tree trunks from the Permian period. These remarkable formations are around 280 million years old, even older than the dinosaurs. Incredible, right?
During the visit, we’ll see fossils preserved in their original growth position, a rare feature that helps scientists reconstruct the structure of this ancient prehistoric forest. We’ll also learn how the gradual mineralization of the wood transformed organic tissues into rock, preserving their shapes for millions of years. This ecosystem thrived when the continents were still joined together in the supercontinent Gondwana.
We’ll walk along interpretive trails and educational panels that explain the scientific importance of the site, which has been declared a Natural Monument. The contrast between the ochre and gray tones of the fossils, the riverside vegetation, and the waters of the Poti River creates a striking landscape that’s perfect for unique photos.
After the visit, we’ll return to your hotel, where we’ll say goodbye approximately 2 hours later.
