Somiedo Hiking + Bear Watching Excursion
Somiedo Hiking + Bear Watching Excursion
We'll start this hiking route through Somiedo Natural Park in the Valle de Lago parking area, where we will meet at 9:30 am.
During the hike, which will take us about three hours, we'll walk through one of the most beautiful places in the southern part of the Principality of Asturias. From the parking area, we'll take the path running parallel to the El Valle River, along which we'll see several teitos: typical huts of the Cantabrian Mountains built from materials around the area.
After the first stretch of about 3.5 kilometers, we'll take a break at the El Gabitón cabin, where you'll enjoy excellent views of the surrounding area. Then, we'll continue the route following the course of the river, which eventually flows into El Valle Lake. At the lake, a natural monument forming part of the Somiedo Lake System, we'll make another stop to admire this ancient depression of a mountain cirque.
At the end of the hiking route, we'll return to the Valle de Lago parking area, where you'll have an hour of free time to enjoy the picnic lunch that you bring. Then, at 4:30 pm, you'll get back into your own car and follow the guide's vehicle into different corners of Pola de Somiedo to try to spot some Cantabrian brown bears.
You'll learn all about the types of bears that inhabit the Asturian mountains of Somiedo. Over the course of four hours, your guide will tell you all kinds of curious facts as you make stops to see bears and other animals such as deer, wolves and wild boars.
At 8:30 pm, the excursion will come to an end in Pola de Somiedo.
Bear Watching
Somiedo Natural Park is one of the best places in the Principality of Asturias to see Cantabrian brown bears. However, the animals are unpredictable. Sightings will depend on various factors such as the weather at the time or the reproduction and breeding seasons of the different species.
