If you want to delve into one of the most turbulent chapters of Ireland's past, Wicklow's Historic Gaol is one of the best places to travel back in time. Are you ready to feel chills with every step you take? Welcome to Wicklow's Historic Gaol!
Famous throughout Ireland for the brutality of its guards and the harsh living conditions of its inmates, Wicklow Gaol is a place where you'll learn about some of history's darkest episodes, as well as its protagonists. This prison, which opened in 1702, was known for its repugnant smells, the beatings suffered by its inmates and the polluted air they breathed.
With your audio-guided ticket, you can take a complete tour of the prison and discover the secrets of the 1798 Rebellion, the famine that hit Ireland in the 1840s due to potato blight, the members of the Hercules ship and even the civil unrest of the early 20th century.
In addition to all the information provided by the audio guide, in Wicklow's Historic Gaol, you'll find different actors who put themselves in the shoes of prison guards and prisoners to make your visit even more immersive.
Finally, this Irish prison has a genealogical library where you can check the digital databases to see if you have Irish ancestry. Don't miss out on this spooky experience!
