Windmills, Dutch cheese, and wooden clogs take center stage on this day trip to Zaanse Schans and LEGO City. We'll leave Amsterdam behind and discover the most traditional side of the Netherlands.

Zaanse Schans: the Most Famous Windmills in the Dutch Countryside

At the designated time, we'll meet up and board a comfortable bus heading north from Amsterdam to the iconic Zaanse Schans windmills. One of the prettiest villages in the country awaits!

After a journey of just over half an hour, we'll arrive at this small municipality on the banks of the Zaan River, where windmills have become the ultimate symbol of an entire nation. We'll tell you the full story as we take in the most famous postcard view in Holland. Perfect for photos!

Do you know what Zaanse Schans means? Or why it was an economic powerhouse between the 16th and 18th centuries? Standing in front of these imposing windmills, we'll learn about their many uses and take a close look at their structure. We'll also step inside one to understand how they worked when they were used to grind the spices brought over from the colonies.

But Zaanse Schans isn't just about windmills. We'll also discover the long tradition of wooden clog-making. We'll visit a Dutch clog workshop and learn about the artisan process behind designing and crafting the country's most iconic footwear.

The last stop will be a visit to a cheese farm, where we'll sample a wide variety of cheeses. After that, you'll have 1.5 hours of free time to keep exploring the village at your own pace.

We'll head back to Amsterdam after a total of 3.5 to 4.5 hours, wrapping up the day trip at the starting point.

Itinerary Changes

Please note that from Monday, June 8, 2026, the order of the itinerary will change.

After pickup at the designated time, we'll set off from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans, where you'll enjoy a live demonstration of how a wooden clog is made. You'll then have around 40 minutes of free time before a cheese demonstration and tasting. After that, we'll get back on the bus and head to Zaandam for a 1-hour visit to the famous LEGO City.

Finally, we'll return to the meeting point in Amsterdam, wrapping up this approximately 4-hour 45-minute day trip.

Boat Trip Option

If you choose this option, you'll enjoy a boat trip around the Zaanse Schans windmill lagoon during your free time, photographing these icons of rural Holland from the water and taking in the traditional Dutch landscape from a completely different perspective.

Volendam, Marken, Edam & Zaanse Schans
