Kariri-Xocó Indigenous Village 4-Day Visit
Trip Details
Day 1: Aracaju - Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó
We'll meet at Hotel da Costa, where you'll be able to get yourself a delicious breakfast. Once we're ready, we'll begin a road trip towards Porto Real do Colégio, where the indigenous village of Kariri-Xocó is located. After approximately 2 hours, we'll arrive at the sacred space of Warakedzã.
There, we'll be welcomed with a Toré dance and a smoking ritual, a lively dance related to the Kariri-Xocó's bond with nature. Afterwards, we'll sit down to enjoy lunch with the locals as we learn more about their history. Feeling refuelled, we'll be ready to witness body painting with the fruit of the jenipapo, a plant native to Brazil.
In the evening, after dinner, we'll light a campfire and sit around it to listen to the ancestral stories of the village. Finally, we'll head back to the camp to sleep.
Day 2: Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó
Our second day will start with the first rays of the sun, which will announce that it is time to go tree planting. This activity will connect us even more with the nature of Kariri-Xocó. Afterwards, we'll replenish our energy with breakfast and a cooking workshop, where we'll learn how the indigenous people have used fresh ingredients from the land for their food.
Afterwards, we'll meet the indigenous leader Takayoa, who will teach us how to make the maraca, one of the most significant instruments for the Kariri-Xocó. Feeling peckish? Lunchtime will come and, at the end of the meal, we'll participate in a cleansing ritual with clay and herbal baths. We'll leave refreshed from the experience!
In the evening, we'll enjoy dinner with the locals and, as on the previous day, we'll learn the stories of the indigenous people around the campfire.
Day 3: Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó - São Francisco River - Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó
Ready for another day of activities? After enjoying a succulent breakfast, we'll head to the banks of the São Francisco River to get into traditional canoes and sail along the riverbed of the Velho Chico. Where does it get its name from? We'll find out as we sail.
After the trip and a swim in the river, we'll return to the mainland and have lunch. Then, with renewed energy, we'll witness two of the most amazing spiritual rituals of the Kariri-Xocó: the dance of the warriors with spears and the consecration ritual, which is performed with a strong hallucinogenic drink called jurema and with the snuff powder made from plants.
After this experience, we'll rest and enjoy dinner before going to bed.
Day 4: Warakedzã Kariri-Xocó - Aracaju
After breakfast, we'll join a medicinal herb workshop, including a tea tasting. At the end of the workshop, we'll start our return trip to Aracaju. We'll leave the indigenous village around midday and start our journey to Aracaju International Airport, where we'll say goodbye in time for your return flight.
