If you want to enjoy the most incredible views of Benicassim, sign up for this fabulous trek through the Desert of the Palms. This is an experience you will never forget!
Desert of the Palms Trek
We will meet up at the scheduled time in the car park of the Carmelitas convent, where we begin our fantastic 2-mile trek through the desert of Les Palmas Natural Park. Get ready to encounter one of the most beautiful views of Benicassim!
First of all, we will go to the viewpoint of the hermitage of Carmen, from where you will enjoy an exceptional panoramic view of the area. On clear days you may even see the silhouette of the Columbretes, a group of small volcanic islands located off the coast of Castellón.
We will begin the ascent bordering the Porteria Vella, from where you will admire the reddish constructions that the monks erected. You will learn why they named this area the Desert of the Palms. Because of its vegetation, you will see that this place is full of palmitos, the only species of palm tree endemic to Europe. You will also see how this landscape is anything but desert. The Carmelitas order named these spaces when it was chosen as a spiritual retreat.
We will continue by climbing up to the famous Bartolo, which at over 2300 feet, is the highest point in the park. Once there, we will come across the hermitage of San Miguel and, of course, enjoy delightful views of the bay of Benicassim and its surroundings.
Finally, we will start the descent back to the original starting point where out brilliant hike through the Desert of the Palms concludes after two and a half hours.
