Bogotá Wayuu Backpack Workshop
Workshop Details
We'll meet at the indicated time at Gabriel García Márquez Journalists’ Park, where we'll start our journey towards the historic center of Bogotá. During our walk, we'll stop at a café and be served a traditional drink. As we enjoy our drinks, we'll discuss some of the indigenous communities from North Colombia. We'll also reveal the symbolic meaning of the Wayuu backpack in Colombian culture.
Next, we'll head to the workshop of a Wayuu craftswoman from La Guahira, the northernmost part of South America. She'll show us the weavings and patterns she uses to make a backpack using a crochet technique brought to Colombia by the Spanish conquistadors. This product is 100% Colombian, and many indigenous families are able to make a living from their commercialisation.
With the help of the craftswoman, you'll design your own miniature backpack. We'll follow a Colombian tradition that goes all the way back to the legend of Wale' Kerü, the weaver spider....
At the end of the workshop, you'll receive a souvenir backpack made with Wayuu weaving patterns. It'll then be time to say our goodbyes from the workshop after about 4 hours.
