Caen Private Tour

We'll meet at the time of your choice, and walk to the historic centre to begin our private tour of this beautiful city in Normandy, the capital of the department of Calvados.

First, we'll see one of the great monuments of the city. This is the famous Abbaye des Hommes: a jewel of Norman architecture where the mortal remains of illustrious historical figures are kept. The most prominent of these is William I "the Conqueror", the first Norman king of England.

The next stop is Place de Saint-Sauveur, where you'll see the sculpture of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar. This square, also noted for its beautiful 18th-century buildings, is very popular for its weekly Friday market.

The tour will continue on Rue Froide, considered to be the oldest street in Caen. Next to it is the Rue Saint-Pierre, where you'll see the church of Saint-Pierre and look at the half-timbered houses of some of the traditional Norman houses. Many of these houses were damaged in World War II.

After a 2-hour tour, you can choose to end the tour at the Château de Caen or at the Abbaye des Dames. In the latter monument, whose architecture is very different from that of the Abbey of the Ladies, lie the remains of Matilda of Flanders, the wife of William I "the Conqueror".
