Historic buildings, sea views and a hotel that doubles as a museum: join us in discovering the best of Cardiff Bay on this free walking tour of one of the Welsh capital's most popular districts.
Cardiff Bay Free Walking Tour Itinerary
Meet your guide at 3 pm at the Wales Millennium Centre, the enormous contemporary cultural centre in the heart of Cardiff. From here, you'll begin exploring Cardiff Bay, one of the most emblematic neighbourhoods in the Welsh capital.
The first stop on your free walking tour will be the old Coal Exchange. The beautiful façade of the historic Renaissance Revival style building will undoubtedly leave an impression on you. In the 19th century, this was one of the hubs of the global coal trade and shipping industry; nowadays it is home to a luxury hotel and features a museum dedicated to the history of the building too.
Strolling through the streets of Cardiff's business district, you'll relive the years of the Industrial Revolution. From industry to culture, you'll next hear all about renowned author Roald Dahl, who was born in Cardiff. Have you got a favourite book by the writer?
Next, you'll head over to the Senedd, or the Welsh National Assembly, passing by the Pierhead Building on the walk. The striking red façade of this dockside structure makes it one of the most recognisable buildings in the city.
Reaching the Norwegian Church and Arts Centre, you'll feel as though you've travelled to Scandinavia without leaving Cardiff. From there, you'll make your way to Butetown, one of the Welsh capital's most historic neighbourhoods, and named after a local family who you'll hear all about on your tour. Finally, you'll visit Mermaid Quay, a shopping centre located right on the waterfront.
At 5 pm, your free walking tour of Cardiff Bay will come to an end.
