Sichuan Opera at the 1941 Tea House

As you cross the threshold of the historic 1941 Tea House Theatre, you’ll step into an atmosphere that blends nostalgia and mystery. It’ll feel as though modern Chongqing fades away, giving rise to a scene suspended in time.

You’ll take your seat among ornamental lamps and dark wooden tables, while performers serve cups of tea with nuts in a ritual that feels almost choreographed. Did you know this tradition was created to keep the tea warm and protect it from street dust?

The show will begin with Huan Ren Hao, a Sichuan opera piece performed by a hua dan, whose movements blend elegance with martial arts. The sleeves of her costume, embroidered in crimson and jade tones, will trace circles through the air as her commanding gaze guides you through a story full of character. You’ll be captivated from the very first moment.

Next, you’ll witness the hypnotic art of the long-spout teapot. The tea master, dressed in an indigo robe, will handle a 1.2-meter (3.9 feet) teapot, spinning it in acrobatic movements that defy logic.

The Quyi Jinqianban will then surprise you with fast rhythms, light percussion, and a narrative that weaves together humor, singing, and physical skill. And as a grand finale, you’ll experience the magic of face changing and fire breathing. Masks will appear and disappear in the blink of an eye, while tongues of fire light up the stage.

After approximately 45 minutes, the performance will come to an end, leaving you amazed.

Keep in Mind

Each performance features 4 different acts selected at random. These will be chosen from the following: Flower Drum, Storytelling, Clapper Talk, Tea Art, Face Changing, and Chinese Opera.
