Comacchio Salt Pans Boat Tour
Tour Details
We’ll begin this unforgettable experience at the Bettolino di Foce restaurant. We’ll board a boat to navigate the ancient course of the Po River and venture into the Comacchio Valley, a breathtaking stretch of brackish lagoons nestled within the Po Delta Regional Park. Spanning nearly 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres), this protected natural area is a true sanctuary for biodiversity.
As we glide across the calm waters, we’ll pass through the historic salt pans of Comacchio, one of the most important flamingo nesting sites in Italy. With a colony of around 25,000 flamingos, your chances of spotting these elegant birds in flight or gracefully wading through the shallows are incredibly high.
Our journey will also take us to the traditional fishing huts, known as casons, where we’ll dive into the age-old fishing techniques and cultural traditions that have shaped life in this region. You’ll learn how the salt trade and a deep respect for the lagoon have connected the people of Comacchio to their environment for centuries.
To top off the experience, we’ll visit a nearby archeological park, featuring faithful reconstructions of two spaces from the ancient Etruscan city of Spina—offering a fascinating look at daily life in one of the most important trade hubs of its time.
After approximately 2 hours surrounded by nature and history, we’ll return to our starting point, carrying with us the essence of a land shaped by water, salt, and time.
