    The walking tour was definately an excellent introduction to Florence .. Our guide was friendly, interactive and very informative.Martinuzzi gave space for questions and engaged with everyone very well, considering they were almost 40 of us..All different age groups... I would definately recommend.. I got the walking tour as a gift with a train ticket...Best gift...as I wouldnt have consider a walking tour before..However now I will have it on as an activity to a new city.. Grazie

The Ponte Vecchio is the bridge that connects either side of the city of Florence, which is divided by the Arno. The oldest and most photographed bridge in the city—don't miss it!

History

The bridge spans the Arno at its narrowest point, where it's thought that a bridge was first constructed in Roman times.

In the past, the various shops on the bridge were inhabited by butchers and other merchants! From the end of the 16th century onwards, the bridge's shops have been mostly inhabited by jewellers and goldsmiths.

How to see the bridge

Of course, the bridge is open to the public and can be crossed free of charge. Pop into the various establishments along the way and see the bust of Benvenuto Cellini—master goldsmith and sculptor.

Alternatively, see the bridge as part of a guided tour of the city, or, to see it from a different perspective, enjoy a boat tour!

Did you know...

Padlocks were once commonplace on the Ponte Vecchio, symbols of love left by couples visiting from all over the world. This tradition, which culminated with the lovers throwing the key into the Arno River, has been banned in an effort to protect the iconic historical landmark.
