Background and history

The mosque was built in the early 17th century during the reign of Sultan Ahmed I. Designed to rival Hagia Sophia in scale and beauty, it introduced six minarets, a bold and controversial choice at the time. The interior is decorated with thousands of hand-painted Iznik tiles, which give the mosque its popular nickname.
