St. Mary's Basilica Guided Tour
Tour Details
At the appointed time we'll meet at St. Mary Magdalene Square, from where we'll take a few steps over to the Basilica of St. Mary, located in the heart of the city. Are you ready to explore one of the most iconic monuments in Krakow?
Our journey begins by studying the imposing façade of the temple, with its two unequal towers that make it easily recognizable. One of them served for centuries as a clock tower, announcing the arrival of every hour with the famous trumpet-call, the hejnał mariacki. Did you know that this tradition is still alive today?
We'll enter the basilica to marvel at its impressive main altarpiece, a masterwork by sculptor Veit Stoss. Carved in wood and polychromed in astonishing detail, it's considered the most important altar of European Gothic style. Each biblical scene is represented with such expressiveness that it seems to come to life.
During the visit, we'll also observe the spectacular stained-glass windows that flood the temple with light, as well as the frescoes on the ceiling. We'll also explain the symbolism behind the pulpit, the organ and other pieces that make up the ceremonial ensemble.
After leaving the church, we'll walk around the surrounding area, looking at historical buildings and details that often go unnoticed. We'll approach the Market Square, just in front of the basilica, to learn about its monuments, sculptures and balconies, witnesses of centuries of history and daily life.
After 1.5 hours of sightseeing, we'll end the guided tour in the vicinity of the basilica.
