Interested in reliving the golden period of the Portuguese empire? Then join us on this tour of the neighborhood of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery. You'll see this historic neighborhood and its landmarks, and explore this iconic Manueline-style monastery.

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll meet at the entrance of the Jerónimos Monastery. After a brief introduction, we'll step inside this Manueline-style monastery. Ready to see this UNESCO World Heritage Site and learn all about the Belém region's crucial role in the history of Portugal?

First, we'll head to the upper cloister, where we'll admire this architectural masterpiece. We'll tell you the significance of the monastery, what it symbolized for Portuguese society, and its historical value during the Portuguese maritime exploration of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Next, in the lower cloister, we'll explore important spaces such as the Chapter Room, the old Refectory, and the tomb of Fernando Pessoa, which was moved here in the 20th century.

From there, we'll continue our tour in the Church of Saint Mary of Bethlehem in Belém. This majestic building is a prime example of Manueline architecture—a uniquely Portuguese style that blends late Gothic and Renaissance elements. This is also the resting place of prominent figures, including Manuel I, his son João III, and famed explorers like Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões.

After visiting Jeronimos Monastery, we'll take a stroll through Belém's other important landmarks. But first, we'll stop at the famous Pastéis de Belém bakery. Here, we'll enjoy this delicious Lisbon custard tart, a secret recipe created by the monastery's monks and still made at this very shop since the 19th century.

We'll then visit the Monument of the Discoveries, built in 1960 to mark 500 years since the death of Prince Henry the Navigator, one of the leading figures of the Age of Discovery. This monument features other historic personalities who helped expand Portuguese influence across the globe.

Our journey continues as we take a short 15-minute walk to arrive at the iconic Belém Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This striking Manueline-style structure once served as a defensive tower guarding Lisbon's harbor.

We'll say our goodbyes and conclude our tour about 3 hours later.
