My guides were attentive to us the entire time; it was very personalized, just my husband and I. Thanks to Fady, our coordinator, and the excellent work of the guides in Luxor (Mohamed), a truly wonderful person. In Cairo, Yahja, passionate about his history, was also lovely. See the world-famous Colossi of Memnon in Luxor—two massive stone statues both depicting the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, dating back over 3000 years!

History

Located to the west of the modern city of Luxor, the Colossi of Memnon has stood since 1350 BC. They're thought to have once guarded the entrance to the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, which was destroyed.

The Greeks believed that the site was built to honour King Memnon, who was killed in battle by Achilles during the Trojan War.

What happened to the mortuary temple?

Recent research has shown that a significant earthquake occurred in the area around 1200 BC, not long after the temple was built. Additional earthquakes, annual flooding of the Nile and other factors led to the loss of the temple, leaving now the two huge colossi which once stood at the entrance.
