History

Located to the west of the modern city of Luxor, the Colossi of Memnon has stood since 1350 BC. They're thought to have once guarded the entrance to the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III, which was destroyed.

The Greeks believed that the site was built to honour King Memnon, who was killed in battle by Achilles during the Trojan War.

What happened to the mortuary temple?

Recent research has shown that a significant earthquake occurred in the area around 1200 BC, not long after the temple was built. Additional earthquakes, annual flooding of the Nile and other factors led to the loss of the temple, leaving now the two huge colossi which once stood at the entrance.
