Matera Guided Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta. From here, we'll begin our guided walking tour of Matera. You'll explore a city inhabited since the Paleolithic times!
Following the Via San Francesco, we¡ll first stop in front of the la primera parada de nuestro paseo ante la Church of San Francesco. Its stunning Baroque-style exterior will greet us as we admire its facade while learning about the role that the churches played in the history and daily life of the Sassi.
Then, we'll reach the Piazza del Sedile and, from there, we'll descend to Sassi di Matera, one of the oldest areas in the city. As we advance, we'll be surrounded by a landscape of stone houses and hand-carved streets that look like a labyrinth. Did you know this area, considered for a long time as a symbol of poverty, is a World Heritage Site today?
The tour will then take us to the winding streets, enjoying the scenic views of the city stuck in time and stone. We'll visit the rural church of San Antonio, a sacred space dug out directly from stone where you'll discover its fascinating details.
Later, we'll be warmly welcomed into a traditional Sassi house. Here, you'll witness how entire generations lived, using an ingenious architecture to adapt to the extreme weather. Wonder how they organized a home without electricity and water?
Next up, we'll head to Via Madonna delle Virtù, where two historic Sassi meet: Barisano and Caveoso. Lastly, we'll reach Porta Pistoia, where we'll tell you the anecdotes and vast past of Matera. We'll then reach the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, located on the border of a cliff.
Finally, after 2 hours, we'll say goodbye at this last spot.
