Mérida Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we’ll meet in front of Saint Ildefonso Cathedral to begin this free tour of Mérida. Are you ready to discover the charms of the capital of Yucatán?
In front of this temple, we’ll discover the first cathedral built in the Americas. Its impressive Renaissance façade reveals Spanish influence, but also traces of the Maya.
Next to Casa Montejo, we’ll learn the details of this 16th-century building. Did you know it’s declared a Historic Monument due to its importance in Mérida’s heritage? There, we’ll talk about the history of the Montejo family and reveal some fascinating facts about this legendary lineage.
Very close by is the Government Palace, famous for its murals depicting the history and struggles of the Maya people, an essential stop for understanding Yucatán’s identity.
We’ll then visit the Gran Hotel de Mérida, an architectural gem in the Porfirian style that preserves the glamour of the early 20th century. Its elegance and historical details have made it one of the city’s most admired buildings.
Next, we’ll see the Church of Jesús de la Tercera Orden, recognized for its beautiful Baroque altarpieces and its historical importance in Mérida’s religious life. The tour will also take us to the José Peón Contreras Theater, the most important cultural venue in Yucatán. Here, we’ll talk about the city’s cultural life and how this space continues to host music, theater, and dance.
Finally, we’ll arrive at Santa Lucía Park, a lively spot known for its serenades, local atmosphere, and its characteristic “confidant chairs,” a symbol of romance and social life in Mérida. After 2 hours of touring, we’ll end this free tour of Mérida here.
