Milan Cathedral is a symbol of the city and one of the largest Catholic temples in the world, with a capacity of over 40,000 people!

History

Construction of this Gothic cathedral began in 1386 and wasn't completed until 1965. The site upon which the cathedral now stands was once home to the Basilica of St. Ambrose and of St. Thecla, which was destroyed in a fire in the 11th century.

Highlights

The interior of Milan Cathedral is notable for its stained glass windows, the crypt of St. Charles Borromeo and, most of all, the sculpture of St. Bartholomew.

Underneath the cathedral, you can also visit the archaeological ruins of a baptistery dating back to the 4th century.

How to see Milan Cathedral

Tickets to Milan Cathedral can be purchased at the ticket office. However, to avoid queues we recommend booking tickets or a guided tour online in advance of your visit.

Another fantastic experience is climbing the rooftop of the Duomo to get some of the best views of Milan's beautiful skyline. There are 256 steps to reach the top, but it's absolutely worth it!
