Guided Tour of Negombo
Tour Details
We'll begin our guided visit at the Sri Mutthu Mari Amman Temple, a beautiful Hindu place of worship which exemplifies the religious diversity in Negombo. Ready?
We'll then walk towards a local market, where you'll be amazed by the colours and aromas at the fruit and vegetable stands. This is the perfect spot to get to know how locals live their daily lives in Negombo!
Our next stop will be down King George Drive, a street named after the visit of King George in 1901. This road lies parallel to the Indian Ocean and will lead us to the main fishing area, where the dried fish processing centre is located. Get ready to see how sea products are prepared and dried, an age-old tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Afterwards, we'll head over to the biggest fish market in the city, known as Lellama. Here, we'll discuss the importance of the local maritime trade. Next, we'll pass the old prison, which used to be part of the Dutch fort, and we'll think about the legacy of colonialism in Negombo.
We'll continue walking to the famous Kothalawala Bridge, where we'll have beautiful views of the fishing boats on the lagoon. Photo time!
Our route will continue towards St. Mary's Church, a unique example of colonial architecture. Did you know that it was built by the Dutch during their occupation of Ceylon? At the end of the tour, we'll get to enjoy a delicious tasting of some of Sri Lanka's local dishes. Ranging from the spiciest to the sweetest options, you'll get to pair your tasting with a soft drink.
After a total of 2 hours, we'll end this guided tour of Negombo and say our goodbyes.
