Los Santos Zone Sugar Cane Tour

At 9 am, we'll see you at the Flor de Loto restaurant, in Providencia de Dota. From there, we'll begin a guided visit around a rural estate in the Los Santos Zone and learn all about rural culture in Costa Rica.

Our tour will begin with a demonstration known as the 'Trapiche de Los Abuelos'. We'll watch this piece of equipment in action and see what it's used for. As well as this, we'll be told how the oxen extract juice from sugar canes to obtain the famous 'tapa dulce', a delicious sweet treat.

As the fire gets going so the sweet juice can be cooked, we'll head to the El Salitre ('Salty Residue' in English) Waterfall. While we walk, we'll admire the breathtaking landscape that surrounds us, which is replete with waterfalls towering from 16 to 270 feet (5 to 82 metres) high.

We'll then return to the rural estate to see the final result of the sugar cane process from before. You'll probably be hungry by this point, so we'll have a delicious traditional lunch. After lunch, you can choose between two different activities. One option would be to attend a cooking class in which you'll learn how to make different dishes with locally grown fruits. Or, if you prefer, you can go on an artisanal coffee tour to learn the tricks of the trade while enjoying a delicious cup of coffee.

After 5 hours of learning all about rural life and farming traditions, we'll finish our sugar cane tour back at the meeting point.
