Salvador de Bahia Axé Culture Day Trip
Day Trip Details
We'll pick you up at the scheduled time from your hotel in Salvador and begin to explore the main sites linked to Axé culture, a prominent Afro-Brazilian movement with a strong presence in the capital of Bahia.
The first stop will be at Dique do Tororó. At this natural spring, the only one in downtown Salvador, we'll see a remarkable collection of sculptures of the orixás. These spirits have their origins in the Yoruba religion of West Africa, and today play a central role in Candomblé, one of the main Afro-Brazilian cults in the state of Bahia.
We'll continue to another important site for Axé culture. This is the Ilê Axé Ogum sanctuary, a highly revered Candomblé temple, which also houses the Fonte de Oxum, whose waters are considered sacred.
After learning about its history, we'll take a break in the area, giving you 2 hours of free time for lunch. After lunch, we'll continue our route at the Feira de São Joaquim market. We'll visit its various stalls, where you can find a wide range of crafts, spices, herbs, traditional food products, and religious items from Afro-Brazilian cults.
Our final stop will be at the Mãe Menininha do Gantois Memorial, dedicated to one of the main spiritual leaders of the Candomblé cults in Salvador. We'll learn about her life and legacy, which remains very much alive even though she passed away in 1986.
From this memorial, we'll return to your hotel in Salvador, where we are expected to arrive 8 hours after pickup.
