Hallein Salt Mines Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at 2 Mirabellplatz and kick off our tour of the Hallein salt mines, also known as Salzwelten, located on the Dürrnberg plateau.
This subway salt mine has been operating for more than 2,600 years, since the time of the Celtic tribes. Its discovery helped the city of Salzburg become a powerful trading community.
Once there, we'll put on our miners' overalls to protect our clothes and board the old mine train for an exciting ride through the tunnels, which stretch up to 1 kilometer (0.8 mi) long, and the wooden slides used by the miners.
During the visit, we'll learn all about the “white gold”, as salt was called in the old days, which became one of the main sources of employment in the area. We'll explain the daily life of the workers and the techniques they used to extract the salt rock crystals by hand. Impressive!
At the end of the tour, we'll make our way back to the starting point, where we'll bring our experience to an end, 4 hours later.
