Explore one of the most important monuments of Spanish Romanesque architecture on this private tour of the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos. You'll learn about the rich heritage of this unique architectural compound accompanied by an exclusive guide.
Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos
At the selected time, we'll meet outside the main door of the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos. The origins of this Benedictine abbey date back to the 7th century and, over the years, it has undergone different transformations.
We'll enter its double-height cloister, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture in Europe. You'll be struck by its ornate capitals which you can see from biblical scenes to griffins, harpies, centaurs, and more. If you look up, you'll see an incredible Mudejar-style coffered ceiling.
Our next stop within the abbey will be the door of the Virgins, which connects the courtyard with the church, a neoclassical temple of Pedro Machuca. Afterwards, we'll visit the apothecary's shop, which once had its own botanical garden. There we'll observe up to 400 volumes and hundreds of medicinal flasks.
Then, we'll also have the opportunity to visit the convent's museum, which houses pieces of goldwork, paintings, and a chalice of Abbot Domingo de Silos himself.
Lastly, after two hours of experience, our private tour of the Monastery of Silos will come to an end.
