Sólheimajökull Glacier Tours & Activities | Book Iceland Experiences

Nestled between active volcanoes and striking mountains, Sólheimajökull is a spectacular glacier on Iceland’s southern coast. This icy wonder is famous for its rugged beauty, dramatic blue ice, and accessible ice hiking and glacier adventure tours that offer a hands-on experience of Iceland’s unique natural landscape.

A Brief History

Formed over centuries from compressed snow, Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier flowing from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. This glacier has witnessed dramatic changes in recent years due to rising temperatures, revealing deep blue crevasses and striking volcanic ash layers shaped by past eruptions.

Best Time to Visit

The glacier can be explored year-round, but late autumn to early spring is ideal for those wanting to see vivid ice features and fewer crowds. Summer months offer easier travel and milder weather, perfect for family outings and first-time glacier trekkers.

What should I wear for a glacier hike?

Dress in layers, with warm, waterproof outerwear and sturdy hiking boots. Specialized equipment like crampons and helmets is usually provided on guided tours.
