Witches of York Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, your guide, a real witch in costume, will be waiting for you next to the Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate sign, the shortest street in York with the longest name in the city. From here, you'll start this spooky witch tour. Get ready to shiver!
We'll start by walking through The Shambles, York's most famous corner, which will lead us to the Cathedral Quarter, Petergate, and Stonegate. As the sun begins to set, we'll hear true stories about women accused of witchcraft in Yorkshire over the centuries.
Then, we'll uncover the dark history of Mary Bateman:—was she really a murderer? We'll also reveal the truth about characters such as Mad Alice. Was it fate that drove her mad? You'll have to draw your own conclusions on this journey into the past.
Next, we'll arrive at St. Crux Church, once the largest medieval church in the city. We'll then walk to King's Square and Bookbinders Alley, where we'll uncover the legend of a magical tree whose history is closely linked to a witch's spells...
Our next stop will be in the iconic Minster Quarter, York's oldest neighborhood. Here, we'll stop in front of the pub where a very famous conspirator lived before continuing to the facade of York Minster, one of the most impressive cathedrals in the world. Its architecture will take your breath away!
Before finishing, we'll cross Stonegate to discover even more sinister facts. You'll look for a little “red devil,” and we'll show you a building that remained hidden for decades.
Finally, after 1 hour and 10 minutes of amazing legends and chronicles, we'll return to The Shambles, where our tour will end.
