Avignon Private Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet in Palace Square to begin a private tour of Avignon. Let's dive into the picturesque streets of this charming village in the heart of the Provence region!
Perched along the banks of the Rhône River, Avignon is a medieval town is best known for serving as the seat of the papacy in the 14th century. Its rich historical and architectural past is sure to captivate you! Thanks to its papal legacy, Avignon is affectionately nicknamed “the City of Popes”. But it's also famous for the 12th-century Saint-Bénézet Bridge, which inspired a classic French children's song “Sur le pont d'Avignon” or “On the Avignon Bridge”.
During our private tour, we'll journey back in time to explore the town's layered history, starting as far back as the Neolithic Age. We'll explore its rise during the Kingdom of Arles, when Avignon was one of the most influential cities in the region. From there, we'll dive into its role in the Holy Roman Empire and, of course, the dramatic events brought on by the French Revolution.
Next, we'll visit the Notre-Dame-des-Doms Cathedral, a Romanesque-style structure from the 12th century, located between the Palace of the Popes and the Rocher des Doms. This cathedral played a key role during the city's early history. Then, just a few steps away, we'll see the Place de l'Horloge, leading up to the Grand Opera of Avignon and City Hall.
From there, we'll explore the Église des Célestins and the Musée Angladon, home to a remarkable private art collection once owned by haute couture icon, Jacques Doucet. Alongside art history, Avignon also hosts the Festival d'Avignon, a major celebration of the performing arts. As our journey begins to wind down, we'll stroll the charming streets, soaking up the Provençal atmosphere among historic cafés and bars.
Then, after an enriching private tour, we'll bring the experience to an end in the historic center, 1 hour and 15 minutes later.
