8-Day Tour of Azerbaijan
Day 1: Baku
When you land in Baku, we'll be waiting for you at the airport and we'll take you to the hotel where we'll spend the next three nights. You'll be able to settle in and relax after your flight and there will also be a delicious welcome dinner.
Day 2: Baku and Absheron
Once we've had breakfast at the hotel, we'll make our way to Highland Park, where you'll be able to take in one of the best panoramic views of the capital city. Next, we'll discover the Old City, named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll be able to see the incredible Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shiranshah, both impressive buildings built in the 15th century.
We will then go to a local restaurant and afterwards we'll explore the Absheron Peninsula. Ateshgah, also known as the Fire Temple, will be our first stop. Do you know why it's got that name? You'll discover that, and so much more before we continue our journey and head to Yanar Dag. Also called Fire Mountain, this natural wonder is sure to make an impression, plus you'll find out its relation to Marco Polo.
At the end of the day, we'll return to the hotel in Baku to relax ready for the following day.
Day 3: Gobustan and Baku
As soon as we finish breakfast, we'll head to the Gobustan desert, to the southeast of the Caucasus mountains. Once there, you'll have the chance to see the Petroglifos, the famous rock art showing scenes of daily life from prehistoric times. Did you know that they date back some 12,000 years?
We'll return to Baku, where you'll have free time to have lunch. Then, with your energy replenished we'll head to the Bibi-Heybat mosque, built in 1990, this is the resting place of Imam Hussein's sister. Of course, we'll also visit the Carpet Museum, a must see in the capital. Finally, we'll take the funicular railway to return to the city centre, where you'll have free time to have dinner before going back to the hotel.
Day 4: Qabala
We'll have breakfast in the hotel and then make our way to Qabala, the oldest city in Azerbaijan. On the way, we'll make a stop in Maraza to visit the Diri Baba Mausoleum and have lunch at a local restaurant. We'll also see Lagich, a 5th century BC town in the River Girdimanchai canyon, and then we'll arrive in Qabala.
Once there, we'll go straight to Lake Nohur, where you can take a relaxing walk or even a boat ride (not included) whilst discovering why it is one of the most special places in the area. In the evening we'll enjoy a delicious dinner in Qabala before going to the hotel to relax.
Day 5: Shaki
After having breakfast in the hotel in Qabala, we'll set out in a southwestern direction and we'll soon reach Savalan, a small village where we'll enjoy a wine tasting. We'll continue our journey, making our way to Nidzh, another small village known for the Udin temple, with an interesting history dating back to the 17th century.
We'll then continue to Shaki, a city on the border with Georgia that was founded more than 2,700 years ago by Iranians that arrived here from north of the Black Sea. In fact, the first inhabitants of Shaki have been traced to the Bronze Age. When we arrive, you'll have time for lunch and then we'll visit the Albanian Church of Kish, a pretty, religious building that has been completely restored and now houses a museum about the culture of northern Azerbaijan. Finally, we'll go to the hotel in Shaki to rest ready for the next day.
Day 6: Shaki
We'll start the day by enjoying a delicious breakfast in the hotel, and then we'll discover the most elegant part of Shaki; the Palace of Shaki Khans. Built in the 18th century, the painted walls inside are sure to impress. But, the most impressive feature is undoubtedly the Shabaka stained-glass windows that light up the entire building.
After the visit, we'll make our way back to Baku, where we'll have lunch in a local restaurant and then head to the hotel. You'll have the afternoon free to explore or relax as you wish.
Day 7: Baku
After breakfast, we'll visit the Heydar Aliyev Center, a modern building designed by famous architect Zaha Hadid. Here, we'll see an interesting exhibition about the history of Azerbaijan. Next, we'll visit the Church of the Virgin Mary’s Immaculate Conception, this was part of a project by Italian Paolo Ruggiero and was built on top of another, 19th-century temple.
You'll then have time for lunch before we go to Fountains Square, in downtown Baku. You'll have the rest of the day free to explore at your pace, and we'll spend the night at the same hotel as the previous night.
Day 8: Baku
You'll have the day free to continue exploring the treasures of Baku and, depending on the time of your flight, we'll meet back at the hotel to take you to the airport, where we'll say goodbye and our 8-day tour of Azerbaijan will come to an end.
