Žiča & Studenica Monasteries Day Trip
Day Trip Details
At the indicated time, we'll begin the day picking you up from your hotel in Belgrade and head to the Žiča Monastery, 2 hours away from the capital.
When we arrive in Žiča, we'll pay a visit to this temple built on the order of King Stefan Nemanja, the first monarch of Serbia. Did you know that he ordered this to be the coronation place for all his successors? So much so that today it is known as the Coronation Monastery.
We'll pass through its imposing red entrance and, once inside, explore its architecture and frescoes which, though worn down by Ottoman looting, World War II bombings, fires and earthquakes, still tell stories of faith and power.
For an hour, we'll learn about the history of the Nemanjić family, the founders of the medieval Serbian state, and get spectacular views of the Ibar Gorge.
Then, we'll head to our next destination: Studenica, a real jewel of the Valley of the Kings, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded at the end of the 12th century, this is the largest Orthodox monastery in Serbia. Its main church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, houses one of the most valuable collections of Byzantine paintings from the 13th and 14th centuries.
Before heading back, we'll have a 45-minute break to enjoy lunch in a local restaurant.
Finally, we'll return to Belgrade, where we'll say goodbye at your hotel after a total of 10 hours of sightseeing.
