Caminho dos Diamantes Hike + Vitória-Minas Railway Train
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll pick you up at your hotel and head to the Belo Horizonte station to travel on the Vitória-Minas Railway (EFVM) train. On board this modern locomotive with carriages imported from Romania, we'll cross landscapes once traveled by diamond prospectors, a journey steeped in history and mining tradition!
After a 1.5-hour journey, we'll arrive at Dois Irmãos station. There we'll take a vehicle that, in a 1-hour drive, will take us to the Bicame de Pedras, an ancient aqueduct that marked the passage of the Estrada Real, and from where we'll begin our hike.
We'll enter the Caminho dos Diamantes, one of the most emblematic stretches of the Estrada Real. This 8-km (5 mi) trail crosses landscapes typical of Brazil's mining region, with gentle slopes and views of the Serra do Caraça, a mountain range of great natural beauty. Without a doubt, it's a perfect route to connect with the history and nature of Minas Gerais!
As we walk for about 2 hours, we'll arrive at the colonial town of Catas Altas, where the imposing Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição church stands, a baroque jewel with centuries of history. There we'll enjoy a guided tour of the temple and spectacular views from its lookout point. Cameras ready!
Following the hike and the visit, we'll refuel with lunch at a typical mining restaurant. With replenished energy, you'll have some free time to explore the surroundings of Catas Altas before heading back.
Finally, we'll return to Belo Horizonte, bringing the day to a close 10 hours later.
