After picking you up from the Cozumel pickup point you have selected, we’ll begin a journey that will lead us to discover one of Mexico’s most moving traditions. Let the journey begin!
The Day of the Dead, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, combines pre-Hispanic roots with Catholic elements. It creates a world where death is not an end, but a reunion with those who have passed on.
To explore this ancestral celebration, the tour will first take us to Cozumel’s Mansión de la Paz Cemetery, where we’ll walk among graves decorated with marigolds, candles, and colorful skulls. There, we’ll learn how local families call upon the souls of their loved ones through music, prayers, and incense.
Next stop? The Corpus Christi Church. This church is the largest in Cozumel and where you can behold sacred art and stained glass that reveal the faith intertwined with the ancestral Day of the Dead tradition. Finally, at San Miguel Church, the spiritual heart of the island, we’ll see how devotion and Mayan heritage coexist in harmony.
During the tour, we’ll also visit some of the altars set up for the festivities. Do you know why they always include bread, salt, and candles? Each element carries deep symbolism, which we’ll explain in detail during the tour.
