Dresden Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Schloßplatz to begin our guided walking tour of Dresden. Ready to learn about this fascinating city?
Our first stop will be Theaterplatz, one of the most striking squares in Europe. Framed by architectural masterpieces such as the Semper Opera House, the Royal Palace, the Cathedral, and the Old Masters Gallery, this historic square is where Dresden's cultural and political life has intersected for years.
We'll then make our way to the iconic Zwinger. Originally intended as the lavish gateway to a royal residence that was never completed, the Zwinger is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. Its ornate pavilions and grand courtyards reflect the extravagance of the Saxon court 300 years ago.
Afterwards, we'll continue past Dresden Castle, the former residence of Saxony's ruling family. Having withstood fire, war, and countless reconstructions, this palace stands today as a patchwork of styles and stories. We'll pass through one of its courtyards, where we'll get a glimpse of its remarkable façade.
Next, we'll admire the Fürstenzug, or the Procession of Princes. Spanning 100 metres (328 feet) and made up of around 24,000 porcelain tiles, it's the world's largest porcelain mural. This tribute to Saxony's rulers is full of fascinating details—see if you can spot some of the hidden symbols and stories!
Our route will then lead us to Neumarkt, the heart of Dresden's post-war reconstruction. We'll also see the Frauenkirche here, a powerful symbol of the city's resilience. Destroyed during World War II and rebuilt using many of the original stones, the church's restoration is a testament to reconciliation and renewal.
Lastly, we'll pass by the Dresden Cathedral, formerly the court church. Built discreetly by a Catholic ruler in a predominantly Protestant region, this striking building holds several intriguing features and is the final resting place of several members of the royal family. As we admire it from the outside, our guide will reveal the secrets of its unique past.
After 2 hours in total, we'll conclude the tour back at the starting point.
