Gijón Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Stair 3 of the Playa de San Lorenzo. With the sea as our backdrop, we'll kick off this free walking tour of Gijón. Ready to discover the maritime capital of Asturias and its history?
First, we'll walk for about 15 minutes to reach the fishermen's neighborhood of Cimadevilla. Here, we'll discover the Campo Valdés Roman baths, public baths that were built near the end of the first century. We'll then see the Plaza de Jovellanos, one of the most historically rich squares in Gijón's old quarter.
Next, we'll go in search of the Plaza Periodista Arturo Arias, where you'll find the houses of fishermen and the historic Tabacalera, the city's former tobacco factory. Then, we'll head to the Cerro de Santa Catalina, a hill also known as La Atalaya, one of the highest spots in Cimadevilla. On this hill, the concrete sculpture named Elogio del horizonte, considered a symbol of the city, was built in 1990. Did you know this sculpture is popularly known as "King Kong's Toilet"?
We'll then pass the Cuesta del Cholo, a short sloping street lined with traditional buildings, where you'll see the everyday life in Cimadevilla. Here, you can take in the beautiful views of the Port of Gijón, known as El Musel.
Then, we'll go to the Plaza del Marqués. This square, dating back to the 17th century, has witnessed many of the city's most important historical events. You'll discover how it was a lively port area during Gijón's maritime golden age, playing a key role in trade.
Our last stop will be the elegant Plaza Mayor, the perfect place to say our goodbyes after 2 hours discovering the main attractions of Gijón.
