The Castle of Guimarães, the Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo, and the Carmelite convent await on this guided walking tour of Guimarães, where we'll explore the main sites of this beautiful city in northern Portugal.

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll start our guided tour of Guimarães from the statue of Afonso Henriques, located next to the Ducal Palace of the Braganza.

After admiring the exterior of this majestic building, we'll head to the Castle of Guimarães, a spectacular fortress of medieval origins, where we'll discover its legendary history by stepping inside. Did you know this castle is considered one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal? At its feet, we'll find the Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo, a Romanesque gem that we'll also step inside to visit.

Our walking tour of Guimarães will continue entering the Carmelite convent of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, dating back to the 17th century. 100 years later, one of its most renowned chapels was built: the Capela do Passos da Paixão. Inside, we'll discover why this place of worship is so famous.

We'll continue our tour by passing by some of the most iconic spots in the old town, like the Rua de Santa Maria and the Praça de Santiago. Our next stop will be at the Largo da Oliveira street, where we'll see the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira from outside and the commemorative stone of the Battle of Río Salado.

After discovering the history of this important battle, we'll explore the Rua Rainha D. Maria II, where we'll enjoy a tasting of a typical dessert of Guimarães.

Lastly, we'll stroll around the Toural Square and, finally, we'll conclude this 3.5-hour tour under the Torre da Alfândega, an Atalayan symbol that has a sign that says "Aqui Nasceu Portugal." You'll learn all about its history!
