Kairouan & El Djem Day Trip
Tour Details
After picking you up at your hotel in Hammamet, we'll set off on a 1.5-hour drive, leaving the coast behind to venture into the spiritual heart of Tunisia.
The landscape will turn more austere, announcing our arrival in Kairouan, the first capital of the Islamic Maghreb and a sacred city since the 7th century. We'll start the visit at the Aghlabid Basins, where we'll spend about 30 minutes. Standing before these colossal 9th-century pools, we'll discover how medieval engineers managed to guarantee the water supply for an entire city in the middle of semi-arid territory.
Next, we'll head to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, where we'll spend about 45 minutes. Beneath its forest of columns, many of which were reused from Roman buildings, we'll understand why it's considered the 4th holiest mosque in Sunni Islam.
The trip will continue to the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, also known as the Mosque of the Barber, where we'll spend 45 minutes admiring its tiles, courtyards, and calligraphy. After this visit, we'll step into an artisan workshop where techniques passed down through generations continue to shape ceramics and textiles.
Shall we keep going? We'll take a 1-hour drive to El Djem, where we'll stop at a restaurant to enjoy a buffet-style lunch.
With full stomachs, we'll take a 1-hour tour of the amphitheater. Along the way, we'll talk about how this small town managed to build a structure that rivals the Colosseum in Rome. Its sheer scale will blow you away!
The route will continue at the El Djem Archaeological Museum, where we'll see mosaics depicting everyday scenes from Ancient Rome in the most intricate detail.
Finally, we'll head back to Hammamet, dropping you off at your hotel approximately 10 hours after pickup.
