Tour Details

Have you just arrived in Heraklion and don’t know where to start? Then you have to book this free walking tour! At the scheduled time, we’ll meet at the Venetian Shipyards and begin a tour to explore the history and main attractions of Crete’s capital. Did you know that Heraklion was the birthplace of Minoan civilization?

Once everyone has gathered, we’ll explore the city’s mix of new and old buildings and admire the beauty of its harbor and the sea. From the shipyards, we’ll see the famous Koules Fortress, also known as the Rock-to-Sea Fortress. Built by the Republic of Venice during the 16th century to protect the island, this bastion is the ideal place to travel back in time and explore the many cultures that once inhabited Crete, such as Armenians, Greeks, and Arabs.

Next, we’ll walk to Idomeneos Street, where we’ll see the more modern side of Heraklion. After strolling past its colorful mural, we’ll head to the Venetian Loggia, built to serve as a meeting place for Crete’s ruling classes. We’ll admire the beauty of its architecture, highlighted by an elegant atrium. It’s one of the best-preserved 17th-century buildings in the city!

We’ll continue exploring Heraklion as we stop at the monument to Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco. We’ll tell you about his connection to Heraklion and his significance to the city. Next, we’ll head to the Morosini Fountain, where we’ll touch on Greek mythology.

Finally, we’ll head to one of the most important buildings in the Cretan capital, the Cathedral of Saint Minas. Did you know it’s one of the largest in Greece? After admiring its imposing exterior, we’ll say goodbye and wrap up this 2-hour tour.

Group Size

This free tour does not accept bookings for groups larger than 6 people, even if separate reservations are made. If you are a larger group, we recommend booking a private tour of Heraklion.
