Gamarra Witch Market Tour
Tour Details
At the scheduled time, we'll pick you up at your hotel in Lima and head to Gamarra, Peru's main textile and commercial hub. Its streets are lined with galleries, workshops, and stalls offering a wide range of products from clothing and accessories to street food.
First, we'll visit the tallest building in the area. From its rooftop, we’ll enjoy panoramic views of Lima, take in the bustling district of Gamarra, and see the nearby hills where the first pueblos jóvenes — the urban settlements surrounding the city — were established. We'll learn about the history of these communities and their connection to the Andean and Amazonian migration in the 1970s and 1980s.
Next, we'll stroll through the lively streets packed with shops, where you can taste local snacks such as papa rellena (Stuffed potato), anticuchos (Grilled meat skewers), tacacho (Mashed plantain), and other popular treats among locals.
The tour will then continue to the famous Gamarra Witch Market. Here, we'll encounter snakes, lizards, and other animals used in alternative medicine, as well as a wide variety of aromatic herbs used by shamans in rituals for good luck, prosperity, and love. We'll also explore the darker side of magic, which is present in some ceremonies. With a bit of luck, we may even witness an Andean woman read the future through coca leaves.
Finally, after exploring Gamarra for about an hour and a half, we'll take Line 1 of the electric train to Cabitos station. From there, we'll take a minibus back to your hotel, where the tour concludes approximately 3 hours after pickup.
