One of the most popular landmarks in Lisbon, the Jerónimos Monastery is a masterpiece of 16th-century architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History

The Jerónimos Monastery was built to honour Portugal's global expansion in the 15th and 16th centuries, especially the return of explorer Vasco de Gama, who had returned safely from his sea voyage to India.

How to get to the Jerónimos Monastery

To get to the Jeronimos Monastery from the city centre, it's best to go by bus or streetcar. Another option is to book a boat trip on the Tagus, many of which include a stop in Belém.
