    Recommended by YouTubers Nations Without Borders and it was fantastic! I loved it so much I took it twice - in the morning (only two of us on board) and with the loveliest driver! Then later in the afternoon - only six others - another wonderful, friendly driver! Windows open all the way and you have the best views, especially when you sit on the right hand side of the tram facing the front:) Also, it includes 24 hour rides on the yellow buses and trams so went to Belem and back!

Perched above the historic neighborhoods of Lisbon, São Jorge Castle is one of the city’s most important landmarks. Its hilltop position offers sweeping views over the Tagus River and the tiled rooftops below.

Background and history

The site has been fortified since ancient times, with major development during the Moorish period before Lisbon was reconquered in the 12th century. The castle later served as a royal residence and military stronghold. Its walls, towers and archaeological areas reflect centuries of strategic importance and urban evolution.

Why visit?

São Jorge Castle offers some of the best viewpoints in Lisbon. The ramparts rise about 360 feet (110 meters) above sea level, providing clear views across the Alfama district and toward the river.
