Ukraine Missile Museum Tour
Ukraine Missile Museum Tour from Odessa
On the morning of your tour, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Odessa and set off on the three-hour drive to the Ukrainian city of Pobuzke, home to a Soviet-era missile launch base. The military operations centre was dismantled after the dissolution of the USSR in the 1990s, but its legacy remains at the Strategic Missile Forces Museum.
During our guided tour of the museum, we'll learn all about the history of the Cold War as we stroll between some of the most important missiles of the 20th century. Among them is the SS-18 Satan, an enormous intercontinental ballistic rocket whose sheer size will leave us speechless.
After contemplating the missiles that make up the exhibition, we'll descend twelve storeys to the underground control room and air raid shelter. This part of the museum housed the command post for ICBM RT-23 rockets and there's still a "big red button" that you can press... if you dare!
In the underground air raid shelter we'll also see the electrical panels that were used for remote control of the missiles. Each key, button and lever had a very specific function and the slightest mistake could have devastating consequences.
Finally, from Pobuzke we'll make the return journey to Odessa. After a break halfway through so that you can have lunch (not included), you'll be dropped off back at your hotel for 6 pm.
