Santa Cruz Neighbourhood Free Tour
Tour Details
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Plaza del Triunfo to begin this free tour of the beautiful Santa Cruz neighbourhood. From its Muslim origin, to its reconversion to a Jewish quarter and later to Christian, we'll learn all about this neighbourhood's history and secrets as we walk through its narrow streets.
Firstly, we'll head to the Patio de Banderas, which literally means 'the courtyard of flags' in English. Can you guess where it gets this name from? We'll tell you all about it!
Next, we'll walk to the Plaza de Doña Elvira, one of the most beautiful squares in Seville. In fact, it's said that José Zorrilla, the writer of the 1844 play Don Juan Tenorio, was inspired by a house in the Plaza de Doña Elvira to create the house of Gonzalo de Ulloa.
Did you know that Santa Cruz was once home to the second-largest Jewish community in Spain, second only to that of Toledo? As we walk down Calle Susona, which is one of the area's typical narrow, rounding streets, we'll tell you about Susana Ben Susón and her involvement in a plot against the Christians who threatened the Jewish Quarter.
Afterwards, we'll make our way to Plaza de Santa Cruz, another breathtaking square in Seville. Here, we'll chat about the great painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's relationship with the neighbourhood.
Lastly, we'll head to the Church of Santa María la Blanca, one of the jewels of the city. At this beautiful 17th-century church, we'll hear some last fun facts about Seville's most interesting neighbourhood.
Finally, after a total of 1.5 hours, we'll bring the tour to an end at the Church of Santa María la Blanca.
